The Anti-Bullying Alliance is working with Birmingham City Council from April 2015 - March 2016 to become Anti-Bullying SEN and Disability Champions. This programme is funded by the Department for Education. We are offering a FREE opportunity to schools in Birmingham to become Anti-Bullying SEND Champions.

This FREE offer provides:

CPD certified

  • an opportunity for a member of SLT and another member of staff from your school to attend a one day CPD approved training course where you will create a development plan for your school to reduce bullying of disabled pupils and those with SEN
  • free access to two collections of the 'ABA Wellbeing Questionnaire' - an online questionnaire for all pupils in your school to complete which will tell you about levels of wellbeing and bullying in your school and monitor progress before and after your interventions. The results can be broken down to report on a variety of indicators including SEN/disability and free school meals
  • free resources and support for your school to tackle bullying of all children and young people with a particular focus on disabled children and those with SEN
  • an opportunity to attend and showcase your school's achievements at a Birmingham City Council celebration event in March 2016
  • access to free online training for all school staff about tackling bullying of disabled children and those with SEN - which includes a module on cyberbullying

Evidence shows that disabled children and young people and those with special educational needs (SEN) are significantly more likely to be bullied or victimised than their peers.

The Ofsted 2015 Handbook says during inspections school inspectors will look at measures the school has in place to tackle bullying of disabled pupils and those with SEN and also the use of derogatory language related to disability. Only schools that do this well will be given outstanding Ofsted results in the area of Behaviour. This programme will support you to achieve this and to evidence your activity to Ofsted.

What will the training day cover?

The training day will cover:

  • Bullying and its impact on children and young people
  • Bullying and the law
  • Children and young people with SEND and bullying – what does the evidence tell us?
  • The social model of disability
  • Challenging disablist language
  • Preventing bullying
  • Effective reporting and recording of bullying
  • Models of response & resolution
  • Development planning

Who should attend?

We welcome up to two attendees from any school in Birmingham City Council including maintained schools, academies, special schools, PRUs and free schools. It is very important that it is understood:

  • This is not just a one day training course. There is an expectation from Birmingham City Council that those attending the course will implement their Development Plans, use the wellbeing questionnaire and attend the celebration event in March 2016.
  • We have two places per school on offer for this event. One of these places must be from school staff that are members of the school Senior Leadership Team e.g. Head Teacher, Deputy Heads, SENCos, Anti-Bullying Leads etc. This is so that we have staff who are able to implement whole school change.

Some feedback we've received includes:

  • 'Excellent day, superbly led - amazing that it was free'
  • 'It was fantastic to be given resources that were so easy to access'
  • 'Lots of practical support backed up by research and knowledge'
  • 'A really useful course with plenty of relevant material - thanks!'

Please note:
  • Lunch and refreshments will be provided. Please do let us know of any special / dietary requirements you may have prior to the training.
  • There will be a £50 'no show' fee for schools that do not inform us they cannot attend at least two weeks before the training date.
